Providing Support to the Fishing Industry

The fisheries sector remains a vital pillar of Ghana’s economy, contributing approximately 4.5% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and generating an estimated $1 billion annually. It sustains the livelihoods of over 2.5 million people through direct and indirect employment.

Yet, within Ghana’s small‑scale fisheries (SSF) sector, over 1.2 million women are engaged in post‑harvest activities as fish processors, traders, helpers, and carriers. Nearly 750,000 of these women, especially helpers and carriers remain assetless, facing low and unstable incomes, unsafe working conditions, vulnerability to climate change, and limited opportunities to participate in decision‑making processes that affect their livelihoods.

To address these challenges, CERATH Development Organization (CDO), in partnership with the Fisheries Commission, is leading the Empower Her Initiative. This seven‑year program seeks to transform Ghana’s post‑harvest fisheries sector into one that is inclusive, equitable, and climate‑resilient.

CERATH Development Organization remains dedicated to empowering fishing communities by integrating socio‑economic enhancement with climate resilience. We seek to foster sustainable fisheries and resilient coastal livelihoods for generations to come by addressing structural inequalities and amplifying women’s leadership.
